According to legend, the custom of Christmas wreaths originated in Germany in the mid-19th century when Heinrich Wichern, the pastor of an orphanage in Hamburg, had a wonderful idea one Christmas before: to put 24 candles on a huge wooden hoop and hang them. From December 1, the children were allowed to light an extra candle each day; they listened to stories and sang by candlelight. On Christmas Eve, all the candles were lit and the children's eyes shone with light.
The idea quickly spread and was imitated. The candle rings were simplified as the years passed to be made and decorated with branches of Christmas trees, with 4 candles instead of 24, being lit in sequence each week before Christmas.
Later, it was simplified to just a wreath and decorated with holly, mistletoe, pine cones, and pins and needles, and rarely with candles. Holly (Holly) is evergreen and represents eternal life, and its red fruit represents the blood of Jesus.
The evergreen mistletoe (Mistletoe) represents hope and abundance, and its ripe fruit is white and red.
In modern commercial society, garlands are more of a holiday decoration or even used for weekday decoration, with different materials creating different creative items to present the beauty of life.
